2 AUGUST 2008
Wow, I did not expect to write an article like this one. The ball started
rolling, and the more I dug into this short-lived team, the more intrigued
I became. It's a title that stands in most readers' minds as a period
piece—not a good one. Extreme Justice was released at a time when the
industry was coming down from it's "Image high," and it preceded the
hullabaloo of Grant Morrison's relaunch.
I managed to score an interview with the the series' creator, Dan Vado,
who shared some great insights into working on JLA in the mid '90s.
Watch for more updates. My scanner is down so I still have some images
to add. In addition, I'm getting a reference book to research JLA sales
figures, so I'll be talking about that, too. This write-up led to updates
in its members' profiles, most notably, Zan
and Jayna. I plan to update
the others' as well.
What factors motivated the creation of Extreme
Justice,
and its creators? Were there any redeemable qualities? > READ

hand, Adam Arnold has covered them quite extensively. But it hasn't been
updated and I'm not sure he's interested in doing so.

10 JULY 2008
Hey take a look at the sequence of Gog-related events here, extracted
from the JSA Chronology. If you see any errors or have comments, please
let me know.
| THE
KINGDOM |
Somewhere outside normal time/space, the original
Superman of Earth-2 (trapped in Alexander Luthor's "heaven")
contemplates his "captivity"
and searches for a way out. NOTE: This series
is the first time the future heroes of Kingdom Come (Earth-22)
appeared in the mainstream DCU, and the first app. of Earth-2 Superman
since Crisis #12. |
Kingdom #1 (2.99) |
Booster Gold opens the first Planet Krypton restaurant
in Metropolis. The restaurant is unwittingly a nexus of Hypertime, "haunted" by
images of heroes from various timelines and alternate worlds (including
some that ceased to exist as a result of the Crisis on Infinite
Earths). |
Kingdom: Planet Krypton (2.99) |
The Superman of New Earth finds Gog battling Captain,
in hopes of destroying Kansas earlier in time. Superman, Batman
and Wonder Woman of Earth-22 arrive
from the future to help their New Earth counterparts with the
aid of Earth-22's young heroes (Nightstar, Kid Flash, Offspring
and Ibn al Xu'ffasch). An arsenal hidden in the Planet Krypton
restaurant allows them to defeat Gog. The "Phantom Stranger" of
Earth-22 steps in to reveal himself as the grown son of
Superman and Wonder Woman (Jonathan Kent II).
The Quintessence reclaims Gog and confesses the error of its ways.
Meanwhile, the Superman of Earth-2 discovers there may be hope
of escaping Alex Luthor's world. |
Kingdom #2 (2.99) |
Our Worlds at War: Imperiex
destroys much of Kansas. |
Action Comics #780 (8.01) |
Our Worlds at War: Superman rescues a young boy in Topeka,
Kansas. NOTE: One might assume this boy is
William Matthews, the future Gog (see next entry). |
Superman v.2 #172 (9.01) |
William Matthews, a boy with faith in Superman, survives the
death of his parents during Imperiex's attack on Kansas. The boy
is visited by a mysterious man called Gog. NOTE: The
Gog of Earth-22 first appeared in New
Year's Evil: Gog #1 (2.98).
It is unclear whether the Gog in this story is him,
or a hallucination induced by the Third World Gog (see next entry).
|
(Action Comics #813, 5.04) |
William Matthews becomes Gog (II) after
acquiring the powers of an old Third World god in Africa. The powers
destabilize his mind and give him glimpses of other Earths. NOTE: In
this issue, the Third World Gog claimed that William Matthews suffered
from delusions regarding his origins. This William is probably distinct
from the William of Earth-22. |
(JSofA v.3 #16, 7.08) |
The Wrath of Gog: William Matthews, Gog, returns for revenge
on Superman. Superman gets overconfident in battle and is stabbed
by Gog's kryptonite-laced staff. (#815) Despite
help from Superboy and the Teen Titans, Superman succumbs to the
poisoning (#816) but his own immune system
eventually helps him recover. (#818) |
Action Comics #815-818 (7-10.04) |
In the Name of Gog: Superman is attacked by an
army of Gogs, recruited from throughout time. (#824) Gog
apparently kills Superman but secretly, takesk him prisoner. Superman's "death" inspires
an army in his name, who battle Gog for a hundred years. During this
time, Doomsday (now armed with a conscience) becomes a champion for
Superman and eventually hunts down Gog. This elder Gog repents after
realizing the horror of his crimes and together, Gog and Doomsday
agree to fix the time stream. Back in the past (the original time
point), Gog simultaneously achieves the same enlightment and calls
off his campaign. He escapes. (#825)
| Action Comics #820-825 (12.04-5.05)
|
DECADES HENCE
Kingdom Come, Earth-22
|
In battle with the Parasite, Captain Atom
is torn open and most of Kansas is destroyed. NOTE: This series
was originally an out-of-continuity "Elseworlds" story
and was later said to have taken place in an offshoot of Hypertime
(a divergent timeline). Hypertime was a concept introduced by
the Kingdom event in 1999. After the Infinite Crisis,
this timeline became the parallel Earth-22. |
Kingdom Come #1 (7.96) |
Superman rescues
one sole survivor from Kansas: a boy named William. Unseen,
the Quintessence of Earth-22 decides to gift him with great powers.
They ask the Phantom Stranger to deliver it to
him as an adult. |
New Year's Evil:
Gog #1 (2.98) |
1st apps. of Wildcat III,
Zatara II, Thom Kallor
as Starman, Midnight, Red Tornado III,
Brainiac's Daughter, Al as Atom-Smasher, Atlas, Whiz,
Ibn al Xu'ffasch, Sandy
as Sandman IV. |
Kingdom Come #2 (8.96) |
The U.N. launches a nuclear attack on the
metahumans. Captain Marvel dies detonating the bomb above ground
zero. |
Kingdom Come #4 (10.96) |
The U.N.'s bomb shunts Superman
to New Earth, where he meets the Justice Society. |
JSofA v.3 #9 (10.07) |
Superman returns to Earth-22 after
the moment of his departure. The bombing survivors agree to work
together with the world's governments to solve their problems. |
Kingdom Come #4
(10.96) |
2031: Gog,
moving backwards through time, arrives to kill Superman again.
He hopes to accelerate the destruction of Kansas, to shake the
world's faith and heroes and lead to their earlier downfall. For
various reasons, the members of the Quintessenece would also benefit
from the Kansas tragedy happening sooner. With the help of the
Justice League, Gog fails to kill Superman on the day of he and
Wonder Woman's son, Jonathan. Gog kidnaps the infant and
moves backwards again in time. Despite warnings from Waverider,
Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman go back
in time with Rip Hunter to rescue Jonathan. NOTE: The
date is given by Deadman. Jonathan Kent's first name was revealed
in Kingdom #2. |
The Kingdom #1 (2.99) |
11 August 2040: Superman
of Earth-22 visits the adult William and asks him to stop deifying
him in his church. William's faith is shaken just as he is gifted
with great power from the Quintessence. With the power to alter
time, he becomes Gog. In madness, he kills Superman and
begins moving back through time to kill him again repeatedly. NOTE: The
date is from Kingdom #1, the date of the oldest Superman's
death. |
New Year's Evil:
Gog #1 (2.98) |

Several small updates to the Titans-related teams, including the Titans
East and Terror Titans. As you may know, I do not belabor much other

I've also added the latest hijinks of members of the Great
Ten and an obscure team called the Freakshow to the Teams

I got a request for link exchange to this great German site, which if

For other reasons, though, it's interesting to click through and see
what's going on. It's easy to assume that America is the only market
for these comics, but in fact there are whole worlds to DC out there
we know nothing about. It makes me wonder how things sell differently
in other countries. And what, if any, adjustments are made to the foreign
versions of DC comics? Are there native comics companies who put up stiff
competition?
If you have insight into this, give me a holler...

Rest assured, even if I don't post notice here, I am constantly doing

Here's a meatier chunk for you. Expanded and revised profile:
"After Maxwell Lord left Checkmate in ruins, the
organization was reogranized by the United Nations. Amanda Waller was
appointed White Queen which, though powerful, kept her from running
field operations. Although she was nominated for the position of Black
Queen several times, the appointment was always blocked because of
her recent affiliation with Lex Luthor. Her solution was to reignite
the Squad as a "pet project,"
with the help of her Checkmate underlings, King Faraday and
Count Vertigo..." > READ ON

» Legion Ephemera!
Get ready for more! I was cleaning out my file cabinet and found some
interesting Legion ephemera...
This is a major one. John Censullo, an early contributor to my Legion
module, once mailed me this alternate story intended to be published
in Secret Origins. Editor Mark Waid pushed this one through
channels after the Crisis, including Superboy in the Legion's origin.
After Byrne's revamp of Superman continuity, this didn't sit well with
the higher-ups. Although Waid fixed it so that it would have still
worked all right, it was killed. A new story was written and ran in
Secret Origins #46. It was written by Gerard Jones and penciled by
Kurt Schaffenberger. > SEE

I have scanned this story in from the original. It offers lots of insights
about the new directions the Legion books took in the late 90s. At this
time, the editor was trying to save the book and open it up to new readers
with the creation of the Legionnaries title. > READ...

29 FEBRUARY 2008
I just discovered this publication, even though it's been out for a while. It collects the Best of the Legion Outpost fanzine which began in the 1970s. This is not for the faint of heart, but hardcore Legion geeks only. I've found its redeeming factors are:
- You can order it online.
- It has lots of interviews with Legion creators.
- One of those is a never-before printed Keith Giffen interview from when he first started drawing the series. He comments on each Legionnaire individually.
- It reprints lots and lots of private, commissioned art.

I continue to add and refine by JLA Elseworlds reviews. Grant Morrison
really unleashed a tidal wave of crap in his great wake! Obviously I
knew that DC pounced on the opportunity to cash in on JLA's initial
success, but I'm still staggered by the number of books I need to cover.
My collection is now only missing JLA: Welcome to
the Working Week,
JLA: A League of One and JLA: Seven Caskets.
These reviews were spurred by the revelation that some
Elseworlds have been spun into their own Earths
in the multiverse. There are some really fantastic stories in
these one-shots and prestige format series. When they were initially
released, I shied away from them; I preferred to spend my time and
money on in-continuity tales. Elseworlds seemed like such a distraction
and frankly, DC's Elseworlds track record was poor (see the 1996
DC Annuals).
But I guess DC's marketing ploy is working on my like a fish in a barrel.
Since these Elseworlds have become canonical in their own right, I've
been checking them out. What I'm finding is often fantasitc! Books like
Superman: Red Son and JLA: Justice Riders feature top notch
storytelling and art.
I still need help reviewing some of these (I have bought some and will
review them as soon as I read them), so if you'd like to help, you'll

I know I'm not the first to post it, but since i just added it to my original

Creator John Byrne played a little joke in this story by including

Brainiac 5 (Mister Fantastic), Invisible Kid (Invisible Woman), Sun Boy
(Human Torch) and Blok (Thing). The cover even mimics Fantastic
Four #249
(1982).

So notice the facelift of the JLA, Teams and JSA sections.
My time on Wiki has taught me some things and led me to pursue more HTML
knowledge. I'm going to continue new and better formatting throughout

Also, I've broken my Squadron

material in my site, for obvious reasons.

11 MAY 2007
» Or Not to "Wikify"
After actually learning the Wiki system and contributing, I decided
that I don't like it. This is why:
-
Verb tense. They advocate writing character histories in
the present tense. What? I cannot get over this. I have always maintained
that I want my visitors to have the easiest, most sensible read. This
means histories are written like real history and the notes that
go along with it are put off to the side for those who want more
information. This includes issue citations (which I make smaller
and not in a reference list) and notes about publication history
and changes to continuity. As far as I'm concerned, the history is
written as if these people truly exist. Everybody knows they don't,
duh.
-
Length. I went to add my Aquaman info to the Wiki page and
had to just stop. Several comments on that page encouraged condensing
(or deleting) excess information. Again, Cosmic Teams has always
aimed to be exhaustive if possible. Why not? If I've got the information,
I want to record it for my visitors. I think you're all smart enough
to skip ahead if you like. I don't like to leave details out, and
I've got more than enough Web space.
-
Objectivity. I don't interject my personal opinion too often,
but in some cases, I really want to.
-
Perception v. Reality. I assumed there were Legions of people
actively adding to Wiki entries. Not really true. There are Legions
of people yakking and kvetching over them, making minor changes and
additions, but like the Web in general, not so many really digging
in to write the good stuff. I like to think my site has sufficient
reputation that you know that what you're reading is solid and oftentimes
exhaustive. I've been at this for 10 years now!
-
DC Database? So not liking these things I checked out the
DC Database project which is similar and thought maybe that's the
place for me. No. Even fewer contributors, and what's the point of
duplicating the info at Wikipedia? It seemed cumbersome and although
I liked how some of their policies were different, I hated things
like citation style. It was then that I realized that I do what I
do for very specific reasons and I work hard to make things readable,
enjoyable and sensible.
So in summary, I do a better job.

4 MAY 2007
» I'm Probably Going to "Wikify"
Sort of.
In a way, I've gotten what I always wanted in Wikipedia: enthusiastic
and reliable contributors. I have never been successful at recruiting
people to help me with this site and for a long time I believed the interest
just wasn't out there. But the growth of DC Comics material on Wikipedia
has made it clear that there are many fans out there interested in this
kind of pastime.
My site is very much like Wikipedia in that it's done by enthusiasts
for no money. No annoying ads. To me it makes sense to merge — at
the very least — most of my individual character
profiles with those on Wiki. I still feel a proprietary connection
to a lot of the rest of the content, though. Actually, bequeathing info
to Wiki will take some of the burden off me. It's often overwhelming
to me trying to update everything. The scope of my site has gotten out
of control.
What to keep? I enjoy writing the teams material the most, but that
info also mirrors some Wiki articles, so maybe I should just move those
to Wiki as well. I'm proudest of modules like L.E.G.I.O.N. and
intend to do more of the same with Omega
Men module. I also like having my own encyclopedic JLA, JSA and Legion
sections, but I would rather keep up my chronologies and ephemera than
individual character profiles.

» Rare Legion Designs by George Pérez
I've finally reacquired Best
of DC Digest #24 (May
1982)! I found it hard to come by. This digest collection was unique
among the series because it also featured a new tale featuring Colossal
Boy that related to the reprint story from Adventure Comics #371-372.
In addition, the issue featured what was billed as "New Costumes!" by
George Pérez. Sadly, only a handful were new, and of those,
only a few were ever used. Blok's appeared only once. The most notable
are those for Cosmic Boy, Shadow Lass and Timber Wolf.
Some Googling has
also given me reason to believe that these drawings were also assembled
into a poster and inserted into the 12/82 issue of Teräsmies (the
Finnish Superman comic).
I have also started a Legion
Gallery page.
